Munnekeholm 10 is currently being used as a cultural student center. The monumental building consists of a massive front house, a functional middle building and a back house. Despite the changes that the building has undergone over the years, it still contains many beautiful original elements. These give away the original function of the building. Characteristic are the richly decorated directors’ quarters, the counters executed in stained glass and the thick steel door in the save in the basement.
The starting point for this design was the existing structure and the existing values. In addition, a different housing typology has been applied in all the different housing components, making full use of the qualities that are found in the original struture. This results in seven dwellings in three different housing typologies.
A public historical monastery garden is located on the courtyard between the Munnekeholm and the schoolholm. A new semi-public inner street, in line with the existing entrance, makes the courtyard public accessible. By opening the roof and the floors over the entire length of the middle section, the inner street gets a lot of daylight and so it’s public character. The public functions can be accessed from the inner street, situated in the basement and on the ground floor. The entrances to the houses are located on the more private first floor of the building.
The breakthroughs, adjustments and new connections are flanked by solid terrazzo elements. The new interventions are clearly recognizable as a new interpretation but also engage in a dialogue with the existing architecture.
